About Orlando International Airport
Orlando International Airport (MCO) is located in
Orlando, being the second airport in Florida, in terms of
passenger traffic. AirTran Airways uses it as hub, as well
as Southwest Airlines and JetBlue Airways. Initially the
airport name was McCoy Air Force Base, after Colonel Michael
Norman Wright McCoy. During the 1962 Cuban Crisis the place
became an important base for military operations.
After the 1970s there was a period when MCO functioned as
both military and civil base. During the late 70s the
present-day Landside Terminal was built, followed by further
development and expansion. About 5 million passengers used
the airport in year 1978, the figure having increased to 30
million by 2000.
The airport central terminal building has two terminals, A
and B, with two common security checkpoints. The terminal
building further accommodates a hotel, restaurants, bars and
lobby. There are two airline lounges-Delta Air Lines’ Sky
Club (Airside 4) and United Airlines’ United Club (Airside
3). The two terminals as well as two airsides are currently
being renovated and expanded.
Two new car rental areas are planned to be built in both
Terminal A and Terminal B areas and the construction of a
new terminal has been taken into account. Transport to and
from the airport is provided by both private and public
agencies. Tourists can use the local metro network, the bus
companies or the private taxi transportation. Car rental
